An invitation from Pat and Chris St. John
30 days from today is the opening day of the Fifty-fifth Legislature – Second Regular Session.
Two coach buses of pastors and civic-hearted laity from Tucson are loading up two buses, 112 strong, at 4;00 a.m. in the morning to join hundreds of Phoenicians and Tucsonians in a prayer-walk at the Capitol. This fires us up! In addition, here in Phoenix our first Spanish-language invitation is on Facebook and going out to pastors this week, and in Tucson, pastors and key civic-minded laity are being personally invited. Given the weighty matters that will be before our legislators this upcoming session, along with the ongoing partisan rancor, we need to unite our hearts together that morning in the hundreds in prayer.
Prayerful Arizonans from all walks of life will gather that morning to be led in prayer by local church pastors on the floors of the House of Representatives and Senate, in front of the Executive Tower, walking around the perimeter of the Capitol complex, and looking toward the Arizona Supreme Court. A nonpolitical, solemn, prayerful assembly.
While so much media attention is given to Washington, D.C., the fact of the matter is, what impacts every Arizonan is decided at 1700 West Washington Street in Phoenix. This solemn gathering is not political. Quite the opposite – it is a Kingdom-minded exercise in obedience to Paul’s instruction to Timothy:
1 Timothy 2:1–3
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior.
As we’ve done the work of establishing this new ministry of connecting local church pastors with elected officials in a COVID year, we see the need now more than ever for a faithful gospel presence at the Arizona Capitol. Therefore, we encourage you all to prayerfully consider your part in this ministry in 2022 – commencing with the Prayer Walk next month.
